The public will have a rare chance Wednesday to sound off on plans for the city-owned Alamo Plaza - once the home of indigenous people of Mission San Antonio de Valero, and later the site of heavy bloodshed at the Alamo. Land Office spokesman Mark Loeffler said the Alamo will put more emphasis on its mission era and contributions of Spaniards, Mexicans, Native Americans and others, while still sharing tales of folk heroes such as Jim Bowie. Pam Rosser, Alamo conservator, said the site needs at least $35,000 for a photo survey, mortar and water-migration studies and a stone analysis of the Alamo church's ornate 1700s exterior faade, along with proposals for upkeep and repairs. Patterson said his agency, the state's oldest, has contract attorneys, computer experts, construction and engineering specialists, archivists and others who deal with post-hurricane beach cleanup, wetlands restorations, problems at state veterans homes and other complex issues. Looking out at the employees, he relived his own Alamo memories: a boyhood photo from his first trip there, and the sentimental strains of "The Green Leaves of Summer," from John Wayne's 1960 movie "The Alamo," he said.
